Short bursts of extra feeding around 7–10 days and 2–3 weeks are common.

Around 5 weeks, your baby may look at faces for longer, react to sounds and seem more awake.

Feeds can bunch together again. Watch nappies, comfort and growth — not only the clock.

Around 8 weeks, your baby may stare at a face, shape or toy for longer and notice familiar sounds.

A hunger and clinginess burst around 24–28 weeks often sits next to first foods.

Around 6 months, many babies roll from tummy to back. This direction often comes first.

The two lower front teeth often arrive first, usually between 6 and 10 months.

The upper lateral incisors often arrive between 9 and 13 months, beside the two front teeth.

Around 10–11 months, your baby may join two actions, such as picking up a block and putting it in a cup.

The lower lateral incisors often arrive between 10 and 16 months, beside the bottom front pair.

Between 9 and 12 months, many babies pull to stand and take sideways steps while holding furniture.

Around 12 months, standing, first steps and changing naps can briefly disturb sleep.

First steps can happen between about 9 and 15 months. Around the first birthday is common.

First meaningful words often appear around 10–12 months. Mama, dada, hi or bye may be among the first.

First steps or first words may be close. Some babies do one, some the other, some wait.

Around 12–13 months, your toddler may copy a simple routine, such as drinking from a cup or putting a toy away.

Around 14–15 months, your toddler may make a choice, copy you or try another way when something does not work.

Many toddlers begin walking without support between 12 and 15 months. Some begin later.

By 15 months, many toddlers try one or two words besides mama or dada.

The first molars often arrive between 13 and 19 months. Lower molars are commonly 14–18 months.

Around 18 months, your toddler may copy sweeping, push a toy car or know what comes next at bath time.

By 18 months, many toddlers try three or more words besides mama or dada.

Around 18 months, separation worries and moving towards one nap can disturb sleep.

Canine teeth often arrive between 16 and 23 months, in the gaps between incisors and molars.
